Environmental issues such as mold and radon can have a profound health effect on you and your familiy.  Learn what you can do to help detect those potential health threats in your home.

MOLD:

Mold is a naturally occuring process in the environment that breaks down organic material.  This is a natural process in the outdoors, but when indoor mold occurs it can lead to health effects in humans.  There are thousands mold spores everywhere, including indoors. The problem comes when indoor mold spores get exposed to moisture and begin to grow.  This can be as a result of some form of leak into the home from the plumbing system or roof.  Mold is typically found in bathroom wet areas, due to moisture and humidity, but these molds are kept under control through normal household cleanings.  When mold forms in areas behind walls and under floors or in attics, these are situations when mold can cause serious health effects.

As part of All PRO's home inspection process, our inspectors look for potential mold issues.  If there are any red flags for mold, the inspector will recommend further mold testing.  The actual mold testing is an additional service and the inspector will discuss the costs involved if mold testing is recommended.

RADON:

Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that occurs from the radioactive breakdown of Radium in the soil.  Radon is present in all fifty states and can have serious health effects on humans. Every home has some level of radon, but only when it exceeds a certain level, is when actions are recommended. The EPA has indicated that Radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the world. It has not received the public attention that it deserves, but the public is now becoming more aware of it's potential serious health issues in humans.  Have you ever wondered why many people die from lung cancer, yet they never smoked in their entire life. As homes have become more energy efficient, it has caused an unpredicted consequence, a build-up of radon gas inside of homes. This is causing serious health effects in non-smokers and even more so in people who do smoke.

The ONLY way to determine if a home has elevated levels of radon gas is to have it tested for radon. Once a home is found to have elevated levels of radon, there are ways to reduce (mitigate) the radon gas to safe levels in the home. Don't risk your family's health by not knowing if there is radon in your home or the home you are about to purchase. You don't have to have a full home inspection to get your home tested for radon, just a concern for your family's health.
